Fishing Reports

Took Brad Grayum, his 10 year old daughter Becca and his 8 year old son Luke on a 1/2 day charter this am.

Conditions were less than perfect as it rained pretty hard most of the am. The river was dark stained, rising and 67 degrees.

Despite the conditions, they toughed it out until noon. I tied grubs on for the kids and they did pretty well, connecting on 28 fish including 2 rockies. Good kids! and a fun morning!

Fished after work till dark with Tim G again. Water was dark stained and 72 degrees 9.0 on the gauge.

Bite was slow again as we managed another 28 smallies. Nothing big tonight (16") was the biggest, most averaging 12-14". Still in the post spawn funk...also the stained water doesnt help with certain presentations either. Most came on SB's.

The North Branch Smallmouth alliance held our 1st annual river clean up today. We had a pretty good member turnout and we collected a pile of trash from an approximate 3 mile area of the river.

We had a good time and thanks to everyone that attended!

Fished with my son and Tim Godshall last night from 5:30 to 8pm. Water was 64 and still dark stained and 10.5 on the gauge and dropping.

I thought with the dropping water they would have been on fire last night but they seemed to be still on the post spawn slow side of things.

We ended up with 28 smallies. My son caught the biggest one at 18-3/4" which made him very happy and he let us know about it the rest of the night. Tim also got bit off by some kind of toothy critter.

Fished with Tom and Doris again on a 1/2 day am charter. We had a small cold front come thru last night which made the am air a bit chillier than the past two mornings. This also changed the pattern we had going for the last 2 days.

Areas where we slammed fish two days ago, were now void of fish. Despite the cold front they managed to do pretty well on the smallies, finishing with 31 fish for the am.

The highlight of the day was probably one of the biggest smallies i have seen come out of the river in while. A slammer of a 21" smallie caught by Tom. When i put the fish on the measuring board, it went way over 20" before i even got it settled. I didnt weigh the fish but it was probably in the mid 4lb range as it was skinny and spawned out.. If it would have been a month earlier that fish would have been way over 5lbs. Tom will receive a Catch and Release Award from the PFBC for his prize smallie.

Tom Marshall and Doris Mendez came up fishing on an all day charter. It was warm, blue bird shy and the water stained in the mid 60's. They through SB's all day and ended up with an even 50 fish. While Tom was the one with the numbers, Doris put it to him on big fish. Including several 18" smallies, a 28" catfish that zinged her drag pretty good and on the final cast of the day, She landed her first Musky! a 28"er.

Tom had a run in with a large toothy critter...i think it was a pike in the mid to upper 30" range. We also saw a nice upper 30" musky laying still at the mouth of creek.

Lots of boat traffic today! and a good day of fishing.

My daughter had her dance recital in the early pm, so i convinced Rich Hebda our NBSA secretary to go out for a few hours. Water was low 60's and stained.

We fished from 8 to noon and caught 84 smallies up to 19"...A very productive am.

Fished from 8 till noon with my 9 year old son. I hadn't spent much time with him as of late due to guide trips (and he let me know about it) so i took him out for a little quality time. The bite was slow in the am but picked up as the sun came out.
We ended up with just over 30 fish in 4hrs. Jordan caught a nice spawned out 18-1/4" and i got one that was 19-1/4" and a spawned out 3lbs-11oz.

Water was 60 degrees and had a darker stain to it. Evidently we got some mud from somewhere..All fish came on the favorite war eagle spinnerbait.

Had an evening charter with Mike Rickels and Co. Mike had 4 people to fish with so Chris G helped me out with the charter...Although we didnt catch many big fish we did do well on #'putting better than 60 fish in the boat(s). All fish where caught on Spinnerbaits including one small pike and one walleye..

Saturdays charter, Mike and Bob thru spinnerbaits again targeting larger fish. We ended up with 3 over 18" and had a run in with a 45"+ musky that rolled on the clients bait.

Sunday i had Jerry Parkhurst, Jack and his son zach. No spinnerbait today as they thru mostly tubes all day. They ended up with over 50 in the boat including a couple of 18"ers..we even got into the first top water bite of the year.

Seems as though many of the fish spawned this week. We didnt see any fish on beds but we did catch many skinny, dented belly, female fish.

Had two more 1/2 day charters today. The first with Cory Hartsell and his friend Mike. They had an excellent morning with 65 fish including 6 in the 18" range all on Tubes. If Cory hadn't kept on pulling a Davis.. he would have had many more fish (inside joke). It was a very productive morning.

The afternoon Charter was with Jeff Hill and his Grandson Alex. Although they didnt get the #'s of the Morning we had some really nice quality fish. Alex had a nice 19-1/2" er and a nice 18-1/2 er we also got one just shy of 20"...no matter how much i pinched the tail..i couldnt get it to go past 19-3/4". Not a bad day with 102 fish total.

Also saw many fish staging to spawn..with the water temps in the low 60's today...it won't be long now.
